PUL-I-KHUMRI (PAN): As the nation went to the polls, militants gunned down a district police chief and wounded three policemen in northern Baghlan province on Thursday, an official said.

Col. Gul Agha, Central Baghlan district crimes branch chief, confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News Muhammad Afzal was killed in a Taliban attack on his residence in Pashayee area this morning.

Some fighters were also killed in clash touched off by the attack, Agha said without giving an exact number of militant casualties. Three policemen suffered injuries in the exchange of fire.

District Headquarters Hospital Director Khalil Naramgoy said a child caught in crossfire was under treatment.

Elsewhere in the district, a resident said, two mortars were fire into New City area, causing no casualties. Javed added the attack scared voters and election workers.

Fourteen polling centres remained closed in the district due to insecurity. But voting went on at 258 other centres across the province, said IEC official Malik Hanifi.
