MAIMANA (PAN): Police in northern Jawzjan province Thursday arrested a man for allegedly firing a rocket at a polling centre.

Police chief Brig Khairullah Aminzadan told Pajhwok Afghan News a rocket hit a polling station in Qazal village of Darzab district, but caused no casualties.

Backed by Afghan National Army soldiers, police launched a search operation after the attack and arrested a suspect from the village. A Kalashnikov assault rifle was recovered from the detainee.

Aminzada said the man had confessed to his crime, saying he was asked by Taliban fighters to fire the rocket at the polling station.

District chief Eng Geldi Murad said the rocket attack did not interrupt the polling process. He added the arrest of the attacker encouraged people to visit polling stations and cast their votes.

He claimed the voter turnout in the district was on the rise and people from remote areas were coming to polling stations.

Darzab is 112km west of Shiberghan, capital of Jawzjan province, where roads are dilapidated.
