HIA deputy leader named as Dr. Abdullah’s 1st VP

KABUL (PAN): The Hezb-e-Islami Afghanistan (HIA), led by Economy Minister Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal, on Monday announced Eng. Mohammad Khan would be the first-vice president if Dr. Abdullah Abdullah won the presidential vote.
HIA spokesman Abdullah Kamawal told Pajhwok Afghan News the party had signed an agreement with the Jamiat-i-Islami Afghanistan on an electoral alliance late on Monday.
Under the agreement, HIA deputy leader, Eng. Khan will be Dr. Abdullah’s first VP and Hezb-I-Wahdat chief Mohammad Mohaqiq second VP.
Formerly elected a member of the Wolesi Jirga -- or lower house of the Parliament -- from southern Ghazni, province, Eng. Khan contested the previous parliamentary polls from Kabul, but failed to win the seat.
At a gathering between the two parties, a message from 1st Vice-President Mohammad Qaseem Fahim was read out. He supported Abdullah’s candidacy for the presidency.
Senior politicians including Arghandiwal and Abdullah, Balkh Governor Atta Mohammad Noor, High Peace Council Chairman Salahuddin Rabbani and others attended the meeting in Kabul.
