Lyons stresses women’s participation in polls

KABUL (Pajhwok): Canadian Ambassador to Afghanistan Deborah Lyons on Thursday called on the Afghan women to actively partake in the April 5 elections and thereby contribute to efforts for peace and stability.
Addressing a gathering in Kabul, Lyons said Afghanistan faced many problems and only youth could help steer the country out of the crises with their constructive activities.
“We also had been in many problems, but we were able to overcome them through determined efforts,” she said, adding her country was ready to assist Afghanistan in any manner to get rid of its problems.
“No country is independent until its people are independent and no country can achieve independence until its people try so.”
The ambassador said her country wished a peaceful next year for Afghanistan and stressed collective efforts to achieve peace.
Present on the occasion were presidential candidates Daud Sultanzoy’s running mate Kazmi Muhaqqid and Hidayat Amin Arsala’s Safia Siddique.
Muhaqqiq said women were denied proper role in politics due to cultural restrictions and those given role was largely symbolic.
She said if their team won the April elections, they would give women and the youth their due role in political affairs and decision making process.
