MPs want frontrunners security ensured

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirga on Saturday denounced the assassination attempt on presidential runner Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, tasking its commission on interior security to investigate the suicide and bomb attack alongside security forces.
Abdullah was leaving a campaign rally on Friday when a suicide bomber in a car targeted his motorcade in the fifth police district of capital Kabul, killing six people and wounding 22 others. But the former foreign minister survived the attack. The second blast was caused by a roadside bomb.
Later Abdullah confirmed his three friends were among the dead. He called the attack a plot by Afghanistan’s enemies, who wanted to keep the Afghans mourning.
Lower house speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahim condemned Friday’s attack. “This was an attack on the nation. If the worst had happened to Abdullah then we would have to hold the elections again.”
Article 61 of the Constitution holds if one of the two candidates in a runoff presidential race dies ahead of election results, new elections shall be held.
Ibrahimi said the attack on Abdullah showed the armed rebels were unwilling to allow free and fair elections in Afghanistan.
He tasked the house interior security panel to conduct investigations jointly with security forces into the attack and share its findings with the committee of house panel heads.
Syed Nadir Shah Bahar, who represents western Ghor province in the house, said security forces should take all possible measures to ensure security of presidential candidates.
“These two individuals are national figures. The elections will be canceled if anything wrong happened to any of them and the country will plunge into a major crisis,” he warned.
The speaker urged President Hamid Karzai to introduce his nominee for a vote of confidence to the house to head the National Directorate of Security (NDS).
Rehmatullah Nabil has been appointed as acting NDS head since his chief Asadullah Khalid was injured in a suicide attack two years ago.
