UK expects candidates to show patience

Jun 15, 2014 - 12:59

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Congratulating the Afghans on the successful presidential runoff election, British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Sunday said his country was looking forward to working with the new president.

In a statement from the UK Embassy, Hague said millions of Afghans took part in the second round of the presidential election, the first time that a second round has ever taken place in an election in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

“Yesterday the Afghan people once again showed the worldinfo-icon their determination to have a say in their country’s future by turning out to vote in large numbers, and they should be hugely proud of their achievement, the foreign secretary said.

Lauding Afghan voters for defying all security threats and took part in the ballot, he said: “Their resolve in the face of threats and intimidation is an inspiration."
He went on to say that “as the polls are now closed, I hope that both candidates and their teams will show the same patience and respect to the electoral authorities as they did during the first round.  It is essential that everyone acts in the interests of stability and national unity.”
