Dr. Abdullah wants Amarkhel suspended

KABUL (Pajhwok): Presidential candidate Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Monday while demanding transparency in the electoral process, urged immediate suspension of Independent Election Commission (IEC) secretary, an official said.
IEC Secretary Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhel was accused of rigging by Kabul police chief while transferring election materials to 21st police district of Kabul and Sarobi district on Election Day.
Amarkhel dismissed the allegations as untrue and unsubstantiated. He said his staff was not allowed by police to dispatch ballot materials at polling centres.
He said the move was a clear interference in the commission’s affairs.
Addressing a news conference late Sunday night, Abdullah said Amarkhel should be sacked from his duty and the issue be seriously investigated.
He also said participation of more than seven million people in the process was questionable because the number of voters in the runoff election was less than the first round.
The former foreign minister explained he would not accept poll results of provinces, wherever voters’ figure was higher than the eligible voters.
