Noor rules out halt to vote-tallying process

Noor rules out halt to vote-tallying process

Jun 18, 2014 - 17:01

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): After presidential candidate Dr Abdullah Abdullah’s expression of no-confidence in the electoral bodies, the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) said it would continue counting votes from the June 14 runoff.

At a news conference in Kabul, Abdullah demanded an immediate stop to the vote-tallying process and removal of Independent Election Commission (IEC) Secretary Ziaul Haq Amarkhel.

He said the election commissions’ decisions would not be acceptable to his camp until as long as his demands were not met. He urged his observers to leave the electoral bodies and return to offices.

But IEC spokesman, Noor Mohammad Noor, told Pajhwok Afghan News both candidates, Abdullah and Dr Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, had signed a policy of the commission. Under that, both should respect the IEC and IECC decisions.

He did not say anything about the policy. But previously, the IEC said it had prepared six policies about the role of observers, media outlets, temporary workers, candidates, political parties and security personnel.

Noor said they continued the counting process in accordance with the relevant law and in the presence of Afghan and foreign observers to void a delay in announcement of the resul.
