Iran wants cooperative ties with Ghani admin

KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran has affirmed its desire for continued cooperation with the incoming Afghan administration, led by Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said on Saturday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif expressed Tehran’s desire for cordial and cooperative relations with Kabul during a meeting with his Afghan counterpart Zarar Ahmad Osmani.

A statement from MoFA said the foreign ministers, during their meeting on the periphery of the UN General Assembly in New York on Friday, agreed on the need for enhanced bilateral cooperation.

Pleased with the agreement on a national unity government between Ahmadzai and Dr. Abdullah, Zarif promised the Iranian government would maintain cordial ties with the new Afghan administration.

For his part, Osmani said the Chabahar port was important for improved trade links among Kabul, New Delhi and Tehran. He called for the early signing of a three-way agreement in this regard.
