Ahmadzai orders review of prisoners’ cases

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai has directed the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) to reinvestigate cases of prisoners held at the Pul-i-Charkhi prison and put the findings on his table until Monday.

Ahmadzai paid a surprise visit to the jail on the eastern outskirts of Kabul late on Wednesday and listened to inmates about their problems and demands, a statement from the Presidential Palace said on Thursday.

The prisoners urged the president to announce a general amnesty, order the release of incurable and elderly inmates, ensure swift dispensation of justice and bring to an end warlordism and mafia system in the country.

They also demanded the construction of a well-equipped rehabilitation center for inmates addicted to drugs.

They informed the president that some inmates had been languishing in the notorious jail for the last 13 years without any trial. Some inmates were as old as 94, the statement quoted prisoners as telling Ahmadzai, who assured them that their pleas would be thoroughly studied.

“I as the supreme commander of armed forces cannot forgive their killings. Those who have committed crimes must bear the consequences,” Ahmadzai said.

For the sake of a lasting justice, Ahmadzai directed the AGO to review cases of all the inmates and present him a report until Monday.
