KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The unity government has nominated Masoom Stanakzai as defence minister-designate and appointed Gen. Qadam Shah as the Chief of Army Staff, replacing Gen. Sher Mohammad Khan Karimi.

A government source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News the decision had been taken after consultations between the president and the chief executive officer.

He said a formal announcement in this regard would be made soon and Stanakzai would be introduced to the parliament for a trust vote.

A former Telecommunications Minister, Stanakzai was born in 1958 in the Mohammad Agha district of central Logar province, where he completed his primary educationinfo-icon.

Later he graduated from the Kabul Telecommunication Institute before joining Kabul Military Academy.

He served as the telecommunications minister from 2002 to 2004. He was former president Hamid Karzai’s security advisor and the High Peace Councilinfo-icon secretary.

Stanakzai was twice injured in two suicide attacks. He was present at the house of former HPC chief Burhanuddin Rabbani when a suicide bomber posing as peace emissary detonated his bomb concealed his turban.

He was again injured in another suicide attack that targeted him in the Shah Shaheed area of Kabul.

Gen. Qadam Shah Shahim, the incumbent Afghan National Army’s 111 Corps Unit commander, was born in Tashkan district of northeastern Badakhshan province in 1963.

He completed his primary education in Badakhshan and then graduated from the Jamiat-i-Islamiinfo-icon Military University during the migrationinfo-icon period in Pakistaninfo-icon and then went to Italy to pursue higher studies in the same profession.

He had previously served as the Commando Unit commander.
